What is a State Certified Smog Check Station?

Main Street Shell Service is a proud provider of State certified smog check in Santa Maria, CA.  We offer smog inspection and repair services 6 days a week, Monday through Saturday.

For a number of California motorists, the term “State station” may be completely brand new.

The California State smog check program was introduced in 2013 to replace the existing “Gold Shield” program.

The implementation of the new State program was the latest attempt by the state of California to achieve the strict expectations of the Environmental Protection Agency.

According to the Bureau of Automotive Repair:

State stations are Smog Check stations that meet higher performance standards established by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Some State stations are licensed to perform only tests, while others are licensed to perform both tests and repairs. The station is required to post a sign on the services it performs.

State law requires that a percentage of vehicles have their Smog Check Inspection performed at a State station. If your DMV renewal notice (see example below) states your vehicle requires a Smog Check at a State station, you must take your vehicle to a State station for an inspection.

Here is an example DMV vehicle renewal notice which directs the vehicle owner to take his/her vehicle to a State certified smog check location.
